S Korean expats sign up for army

South Koreans once went abroad to avoid national service, but growing numbers are returning to do their “duty”.

South Korea has seen an unusual increase in the number of its citizens living abroad returning to the country to undertake national military service.

While many people were known to leave the country in previous years to escape the mandatory service, the number of applications by expatriate South Koreans to complete their national “duty” has almost doubled in five years.

Al Jazeera’s Harry Fawcett reports from Seoul.
