Deadly clashes erupt in western Libya

At least 14 people killed as fresh fighting breaks out between rival armed groups in western city of Zuwara.

Libya

At least 14 people have been killed over the last two days in renewed clashes between rival armed groups in the city of Zuwara in the west of the country.

The National Transitional Council (NTC) had mediated between fighters from the city and others from nearby Jamil, but the clashes re-erupted after Zuwara fighters allegedly opened fire on their rivals.

Local officials cited vendettas between the rival groups as the cause for the fighting, but some said that lingering resentment over the alleged loyalty of some to Libya’s former leader Muammar Gaddafi was also a factor.

Large amounts of weapons left over from Libya’s uprising against Gaddafi have also impeded ceasefire efforts.
