US unveils ‘pain ray’ for riot control

Costing more than $120m to develop, it was deployed in Afghanistan but recalled due to concerns about public perception.

In order to enhance public opinion of a new crowd control technology, the US military has been showcasing a new weapon it has nicknamed the “pain ray”.

The high-tech system cost more than $120m to develop and was deployed in Afghanistan two years ago. It was recalled, however, due to concerns about the public perception that the military would be “microwaving” Afghans.
