Sandstorms are a feature of life across much of the Arabian Peninsula, the Levant countries and northern China. Climate change is expected to alter their frequency and distribution. Whilst a warmer world would generally be expected to increase their spatial and temporal distribution, some areas, such as China, are expected to see a decrease in coming years.
Other factors also influence the frequency of sandstorms, including farming and the abstraction of water.
For many people, sandstorms are a part of everyday life. Asthma and other respiratory problems can add to underlying pollutions of air pollution, especially in urban areas. Our gallery shows people carry on regardless.
