China’s ‘quiet campaign’ in Hong Kong
Tensions on the rise as some accuse mainland China of silencing criticism in the island territory.

China is due to choose a new chief executive for Hong Kong this week, a process that normally would not cause much of a stir.
But a recent corruption scandal involving Beijing’s perceived “top candidate” has angered people in the territory, a former British colony that is now a special administrative region with a separate political system to mainland China.
Tensions are also on the rise as some accuse Beijing of a “quiet campaign” to silence criticism.
