Peru jails prisoner of neglect

State of emergency declared as prisons suffering from lack of infrastructure face overcrowding and violence.

The state of prisons in Peru is so bad that the government there has declared a state of emergency.

Jail populations have increased almost 50 per cent in the past five years and violence and corruption are also urgent issues.

The lack of investment in infrastructure is common in prisons not just in Peru but across Latin America, where it is giving way to systematic persecution by certain groups and individuals.
