Mexico mayor takes unique crack at crime

In Mexico, fighting organised crime has become an increasingly difficult and dangerous task.

Yet, Mauricio Fernandez, the colourful mayor of a wealthy suburb of Monterrey, says crime in his municipality is lower than in most US cities and municipalities in Europe.

He says getting mayors involved in local security issues is better than relying on the federal government. His critics, however, say Fernandez has cut deals with drug cartels.
