When a tsunami struck Japan in March 2011, the last surviving geisha in the town of Kamaishi thought the disaster had claimed her beloved shamisen, a traditional Japanese stringed instrument.
The grandson of 85-year-old Tsuyako Ito eventually found the musical device among some wreckage.
Now that it has been repaired, Ito is practising for a memorial performance for this weekend’s anniversary of the disaster.
Al Jazeera’s Harry Fawcett reports from Kamaishi.
