Nearly 450 rhinos were brutally attacked for their horns in South Africa last year, with most of the disfigured animals left to die.
The horns are prized in some eastern Asian nations for their alleged health benefits, and demand for them is increasing.
The soaring prices have attracted legions of poachers and an increasing number of corrupt veterinarians.
