Spain wins battle for shipwreck treasure

After 200 years at the bottom of the sea, $500m worth of imperial Spanish coins reaches Madrid.

After centuries on the ocean floor and a five year-long legal battle, a massive haul of sunken treasure has finally arrived in Spain.

The ancient gold and silver coins, worth an estimated $500m, were recovered from a sunken Spanish ship in 2007 by a US exploration company.

In the ensuing legal battle, Spain successfully argued that the treasure was part of its heritage and should be given back.

Al Jazeera’s Andy Gallacher reports from the US state of Florida.
