Yemeni fears over al-Qaeda expansion

Armed group’s bid to expand its reach is cause for fresh worry ahead of presidential poll.

Al Qaeda furthers reach in southern Yemen

Al-Qaeda’s growing presence in southern Yemen is raising fresh concerns ahead of the country’s singe-candidate presidential election this week.

Last May, the city of Zinjibar fell to a group affiliated with al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

A failed military offensive to push the group out of the city left massive destruction and triggered an exodus of refugees.

While remaining residents worry over the lack of security, it is said al-Qaeda is looking to expand its reach within the country.
