Spanish pin hopes on annual Christmas lottery

World’s richest lottery, known in Spain as El Gordo, set to pay out more than $3bn in tax-free prizes.

For some lucky people talk of austerity in Spain will become meaningless when the winners in the world’s biggest lottery are announced on Saturday afternoon.

Spaniards queued around the block for tickets for the Christmas lottery, also called “El Gordo” – the fat one – that pays out $3.3bn in tax-free awards.

But what happens if you’re the only one in your town who misses out on the big win?

Al Jazeera’s Simon McGregor-Wood reports from Sodeto, in northern Spain.
