US labels Lebanese politician ‘terrorist’

US says putting former information minister on terrorist list is one way to curb Syria’s regional influence.

The US government has placed sanctions on a former Lebanese politician with strong ties to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Michel Samaha, the former information minister who was arrested by Lebanese authorities for planning to assassinate political and religious leaders supportive of Syria’s opposition in Lebanon, has been declared a “global terrorist” by the US.
