Defying threats on Afghan Taliban turf

Assassination attempts fail to intimidate district governor in the southern province viewed as the group’s birthplace.

The Taliban are waging a deadly battle to recapture their spiritual birthplace – the southern Afghan province of Kandahar.

Targeted killings there are on the rise and dozens of local leaders, and even teachers, have been killed.

One district governor, Hamdullah Nazek, however, remains defiant even after numerous attempts to assassinate him.

Al Jazeera’s Bernard Smith reports from Kandahar.
