Georgia seeks closer ties with Abkhazia

Efforts to improve relations have been hampered by breakaway region’s dependency on Russia.

Georgia’s newly elected government says it wants to build closer ties with the country’s lost territory – the breakaway republic of Abkhazia. 

But the Abkhazian government’s political and economic dependence on Russia, which has soured relations with Georgia, has proven to be a major setback.
