Turkey supports Syria ceasefire

International envoy’s mission to establish cessation of violence gains regional support.

As the Syrian crisis escalates, appearing now to be spilling over its borders into Lebanon and Turkey, international envoy Lakhdar Brahimi has arrived in Damascus.

Brahimi is attempting to establish a ceasefire in Syria during the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha.

Turkish authorities had been criticised for their military response to cross-border shelling from Syria, but attitudes may be softening, now Ankara’s support for a ceasefire has been established.

Al Jazeera’s Zeina Khodr reports from Antakya in southern Turkey, close to the Syrian border.
