Social issues neglected on US campaign trail

Candidates rarely mention abortion and gay marriage, with swing voters unmoved by such issues.

President Barack Obama and his Republican rival, Mitt Romney, have staked out opposite positions on abortion rights and gay marriage, but both candidates have tended to avoid mention of social issues the US campaign trail.

Over the past two decades, such issues have dramatically lost their power to sway voters, with cultural conservatives already Republican, and cultural liberals sticking with the Democratic party.
