Floods in Nigeria leave at least 300 dead

Many say government not ready for rainfall, despite warnings, as more than one million people displaced.

At least 300 people have been killed in Nigeria and over one million displaced by flooding caused by heavy rains, emergency co-ordinators say

The rains began in the country’s north and caused the country’s two biggest rivers to burst their banks.

The waters have now made their way to the oil producing region in the south

Many Nigerians blame the government for their suffering and say the authorities were not prepared to evacuate people or provide shelter and other emergency services – despite a warning that there would be major flooding this year.

Al Jazeera’s Yvonne Ndege reports from Rivers State.
