Philippines cracks down on election murders

As voting season draws near, fears mount of assassinations of political figures by their rivals.

The government of the Philippines has pledged to disband dozens of private armies ahead of local elections next year.

Manila wants to make sure there is not a repeat of events in 2009, when nearly 60 people died in a massacre.

Non-governmental organisation Human Rights Watch wants politicians to make sure the keep their promise.
