Dutch villages evacuated after flooding

About 800 people ordered to leave their homes as high waters threatens to cause major dyke break.

A leaking dyke in the north of the Netherlands has forced about 800 people to leave their homes.

The army has been called in to assist the affected villagers in Groningen province, where heavy rainfall has been swelling inland rivers and canals.

Hundreds of farms and homes are threatened by the flooding, which could affect thousands of people and farm animals.
