Call for decrease in UN force in Haiti

Latin American nations want gradual withdrawal of UN peacekeepers amid anger over alleged sexual assault.

Latin American countries have called for gradual decrease in the UN peacekeeping force in Haiti during a meeting of ministers in Uruguay.

It comes amid widespread anger across quake-ravaged Haiti over an alleged sexual assault of a man by UN peacekeepers from Uruguay.

Brought in to maintain peace, the UN soldiers have often been accused of using too much force over the years.

Haitians, who have suffered decades of severe poverty and political instability, see the UN soldiers as outsiders.

Al Jazeera’s Ross Velton reports from Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital.
