Tensions rise over migrants in Libya

African migrants in Tripoli are hiding from rebels who suspect they are Gaddafi mercenaries.

Migrants from across sub-Saharan Africa are scattered around Tripoli, hiding where they believe they won’t be spotted by rebel fighters who suspect them of being Muammar Gaddafi’s mercenaries.

In parts of the capital, Libyan authorities have even set up holding centres for migrants they believe are affiliated to the embattled leader, and they do not want the media speaking to them.

The tensions in Libya’s relationship with its African migrants is not new, but the war with Gaddafi has made everything far worse.
