Fears of ‘resource curse’ in East Timor
Some fear abundant resources could turn out to be a curse in wake of frenetic economic growth.

Twelve years ago, violence marred the referendum that brought independence to East Timor.
Then oil and gas were found and, today, East Timor’s economy is one of the fastest-growing in the world.
But, as Andrew Thomas reports from the capital Dili, some worry the pace of growth is getting out of control and could lead to a “resource curse”.
