Plan threatens Uganda’s Mabira rainforest
Government under pressure to stop plan to use nearly one-quarter of protected land to grow sugar cane.

The Mabira rainforest in Uganda has been protected since 1932, but the government has revived a plan to give away nearly one-quarter of it to grow sugar cane.
Environmentalists say the government is killing the future of the country’s forests, while officials say they are only clearing damaged and unsustainable areas.
