Voters chosen by the rulers of United Arab Emirates cast their ballots on Saturday in only the second-ever election to select members of the country’s advisory federal national council.

Some 129,000 citizens are eligible to vote for 20 representatives, out of a field of 450 candidates, in 13 voting centres, according to government figures.

Although not all citizens are invited to vote, the size of the electorate has been significantly increased from 6,600 voters in 2006.
