Flood-hit Pakistani region braced for rains
Hundreds dead and many thousands left homeless by flooding in Sindh, with more heavy rains on the way.
People in Pakistan’s southern Sindh province are bracing themselves for more monsoon rains to come.
But it is not just rural areas that are struggling to cope. Major cities, including Karachi and Hyderabad, have also been badly affected, and more bad weather is expected between Wednesday and the end of the week.
The floods began in early August, but heavy rains have compounded the damage and hampered relief efforts.
More than 200 people have been killed, up to 200,000 made homeless and 4.2 million acres of agricultural land have been inundated, authorities said.
Most of the displaced are staying in camps, under whatever shelter they can find, or in the open.
Many in the region are still recovering from last year’s devastating floods, which brought widespread criticism of the government because of its slow response.
About 800,000 families remain without permanent shelter, and more than one million people still need food assistance.
