Afghans jostle over effort to unseat MPs

Nearly a year has passed since Afghanistan held a parliamentary election, but debate continues over who should actually be seated.

Though the politicians elected last fall have gone about government business since being elected, a special tribunal created by President Hamid Karzai has invalidated around a quarter of parliament.

Some argue that Karzai must endorse the special court’s findings and remove those who they describe as linked to criminal elements and guilty of fraud, but those opposed to Karzai said his tribunal is itself illegal.

Meanwhile, a resurgent Taliban recently has pulled off spectacular attacks, raising doubts about Afghanistan’s ability to handle its own security affairs when foreign troops withdraw.
