A United Nations Special Rapporteur has called on Thailand to take the lead in Southeast Asia’s battle against human trafficking and to do more to protect the rights of migrant workers.
Joy Ngozi Ezeilo, UN Special Rapporteur on Trafficjing in Persons for the UN High Commissioner on Human Rights, presented her preliminary findings after conducting a fact-finding mission in the Thai provinces of Chiang Mai, Tak, Samut Sakhon and Songkhla.
Ezeilo said widespread corruption and inadequate law enforcement in Thailand allow traffickers to exploit the poor and needy.
