Syrian state television has reported that Israeli troops have shot dead 20 pro-Palestinian protesters at the Golan Heights frontier.

The troops opened fire across the demarcation line when protesters marched towards a border fence in the Israeli-occupied area.

Sunday’s protest was held on “Naksa Day’, marking the 44th anniversary of the 1967 war, when Israel occupied the Golan Heights.

Mark Regev, the Israeli government spokesman, said soldiers opened fire as a “last resort” after urging protesters not to cross the border.

In East Jerusalem and the rest of the Palestinian Territories, there was relative calm.  Some minor scuffles took place in the occupied West Bank.

Al Jazeera’s Andrew Simmons reports from East Jerusalem.
