North and South Sudan sign pact over Abyei

North and South Sudan have signed a pact providing for demilitarisation of disputed Abyei region.

Former South African President Thabo Mbeki, who is helping lead talks, said this on Monday.

“The SPLM (Sudan People’s Liberation Movement) and the Sudanese government have signed an agreement on Abyei,” he told reporters in Addis Ababa.

“It provides for the demilitarisation of Abyei so that the Sudanese armed forces would withdraw and for the deployment of Ethiopian forces”.
