Rebel forces in Libya continue to battle pro-government troops as they advance towards the capital, Tripoli.

As Al Jazeera’s Tony Birtley reports from the frontline near Dafniya, more than 13,000 Libyans have been killed already in a conflict that has no end in sight.

Heavy gun battles were reported on Saturday to be taking place outside Nalut, in the country’s northwest. Al Jazeera’s James Bays, reporting from the area, described heavy explosions and plumes of smoke rising from the city.

“We can hear small arms and machine guns as well. Mortars and missles are also being used,” he said.

The fighting in Nalut comes a day after the rebels captured a 2km stretch west of Misurata in central Libya.
