Unrest started in Daraa in the south but has spread across the country.

Protests that first erupted in Syria around March 15 have been growing steadily every week, with tens of thousands of people calling for sweeping reforms of the country’s authoritarian regime.

More than 200 people have been killed in the unrest, according to human rights groups.

The first protests were held in Daraa in the south, but the coastal city of Baniyas has become another flashpoint. A sit-in protest in Homs on April 18, broken up by security forces, showed that unrest is spreading.

Violent protests have also taken place in the Mediterranean port city of Latakia.
