A UN war crimes tribunal has convicted two former Croatian army generals for the persecution and murder of ethnic Serbs during the 1990s.

Several hundred people gathered to watch the verdict relayed live from The Hague on big screens, many expecting the defendants to be acquitted. However, the Hague had come to the opposite conclusion.

The Croatian government is appealing for calm but the verdicts have created a tense political situation. War veterans are organising protest marches in Zagreb for Saturday.
