The 150th anniversary commemoration purports to be a more accurate and inclusive event that reflects the participation of America’s black population in the civil war.
A ceremony was held on Tuesday in South Carolina at the site where northern and southern states clashed, leading to the deaths of more than 600,000 people.
Al Jazeera’s Tom Ackerman reports from the commemorations at Fort Sumter.
