Battle of Tahrir Square

Scenes of violence as anti-government protesters and pro-Mubarak supporters clash in the centre of Cairo.

As protests became violent in Tahrir Square on Wednesday night, Al Jazeera’s correspondent reported that one of the many wounded protesters was being treated by doctors who had later taken him away to an ambulance.

“There was a puddle of blood on the concrete beneath the wounded man,” our correspondent added.

This was one of many such scenes in the square, which has been the epicentre of ongoing protests against the government of Hosni Mubarak, the president, that have now entered their tenth day.

One doctor told Al Jazeera that gunfire heard in the square came from pro-Mubarak protesters, not from the army.
