As violence erupted, thousands of inmates, including political prisoners, escaped from jail.

Egypt’s anti-government uprising has also seen lawlessness and looting in several cities.
As the police abandoned their posts, thousands of prisoners were set free across the country, in a series of mass jailbreaks.
