Libya’s Berbers demand basic rights

Persecuted for 40 years under Muammar Gaddafi, minority tribe who fought ex-leader appeal for recognition.

A minority tribe that has been persecuted in Libya for 40 years is demanding it should be given basic rights.

Berber fighters took on those loyal to Muammar Gaddafi in the country’s western mountains during Libya’s uprising against the former leader.

They now say that they want their language to be officially recognised and say the new government must include their representatives. The country’s rulers, however, have not so far acknowledged their demands.

Al Jazeera’s Imran Khan reports from Zuwarah, in western Libyan.
