Residents situated near Mullaperiyar Dam in Kerala, India, live in fear that its leaking walls will collapse, unleashing a deadly flood of water.
Their fears have been heightened by the release of Dam 999, a film which depicts the breaching of a dam and its disastrous consequences.
Frightened residents have begun mobilising protests across villages, towns and cities – demanding that the government fix the dam before it is too late. Some have even gone on hunger strike.
Residents in nearby Timil Nadu, however, are afraid that a new dam will limit their access to the much needed water.
Meanwhile, India’s Supreme Court has ruled that the Mullaperiyar Dam is structurally sound.
It is now up to the leaders of this region to find a solution that can calm nerves and reduce concerns in the community.
