US army sergeant convicted of Afghan murders

Soldier convicted of murdering unarmed civilians and cutting fingers from their corpses as head of rogue platoon.

US soldier, staff sergeant Calvin Gibbs, has been found guilty of leading what he described as a ‘kill team’ in Afghanistan.

Gibbs was convicted on 15 charges, including murder and conspiracy, after he led a rogue unit of the 5th Stryker Brigade in the premeditated killing of unarmed Afghan civilians last year.

He was also found guilty of beating a soldier who reported hashish use to superiors and of military code violations for cutting fingers off bodies as war trophies.

Al Jazeera’s Jesse Mesner-Hage reports.
