Mugabe seeks early poll to end coalition

Zimbabwe president wants elections as early as March in bid to end ‘forced marriage’ with rival MDC party.

Zimbabwe’s electoral commission says it needs $220m to hold a referendum on the new constitution and a general election next year.

A coalition government was formed in 2008 between President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu PF party and Morgan Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change after a disputed vote.

There is speculation that Mugabe’s health could be the reason the president is now pushing for elections so soon.
