Argentina seeks life term for ex-navy officer

Alfredo Astiz, dubbed Blond Angel of Death, is accused of human rights abuses during 1976-1983 military rule.

An Argentine court is due to sentence a former navy captain dubbed the Blond Angel of Death along with 17 others suspected of human rights abuses during military rule between 1976 and 1983.

Alfredo Astiz and the other defendants are accused of abuses at the Navy Mechanics School detention centre and could face life in prison.

Official figures say 9,000 people were kidnapped, tortured and killed in what became known as Argentina’s “Dirty War,” but many believe the real number to be closer to 30,000.
