Mexico police ‘ready’ for Pan American Games

More than 11,000 police officers and soldiers deployed for security as sport event opens in Guadalajara.

The Pan American Games, the second largest multi-sport event after the Summer Olympics, have opened in Guadalajara, Mexico.

Along with the more than 6,000 athletes from 42 countries participating, the city will host about 11,000 police officers and soldiers deployed for the duration of the Games.

Mexico has high levels of crime and drug violence, but officials say security will be tight and they are prepared for any type of threat.
