Year-long celebrations planned to honour the Sikh temple, a century-old sanctuary in western Canada.

The Gur Sikh Temple in Abbottsford, British Columbia is the oldest standing Sikh Temple in all of North America, and a host of celebrations are being planned to celebrate its 100th birthday.
The temple was constructed in 1911 by a small group of Punjabi farm workers and labourers who had settled in the area a century ago.
Now, it is a Canadian National Historic site, the only Sikh Temple in the world to have been given heritage status of any kind.
A year of celebratory plans includes the construction of a museum in the temple’s basement and the issuance of a national stamp.
