Sudan: a history divided

The family of independent Sudan’s first leader frown at the possibility of a north-south split.

Sudan referendum

The family of Ismail Al-Azhari, leader of Sudan when it gained independence from British rule, feel a vote for separation would be an insult to the heroes of their country’s independence movement.

The flag atop the family’s home flies at half mast and will only be raised at the end of July when the transitional period after the referendum comes to an end.

Al Jazeera’s Mohammed Adow reports.
