Domestic abuse rife in Peru

President-elect promises to address cycles of violence against women.

When Peru’s president-elect Ollanta Humala takes office next month, one of the many issues he says he’ll tackle is domestic violence.

According to the World Health Organization Peru has some of the world’s highest levels of violence against women. 

Sixty-one per cent of women in the Peruvian city of Cuzco have been abused.

Al Jazeera’s Teresa Bo traveled there and met one woman struggling to break free from a cycle of abuse.
