‘Significant’ blow for Christchurch

Bob Parker, mayor of New Zealand’s second-largest city, says some essential services are down after 7.1 magnitude quake.

A state of emergency has been declared in New Zealand’s second largest city after a powerful earthquake rocked the south island.

There are no reports of any deaths, but Bob Parker, the mayor of Christchurch, says there is widespread damage, as well as power cuts.
