Fresh succession fears in Egypt

Egyptians speculate president’s son at Middle East talks to boost his image.

The attendance and involvement of the son of the Egyptian president, Hosni Mubarak, in Palestinian-Israeli talks hosted by the US have raised speculation in Egypt over whether he will succeed his father in office.

Egyptian opposition groups say Gamal Mubarak’s appearance at such high-level discussions is an attempt to boost his image as a potential leader, and many fear a presidential election could be rigged to grant him victory.

But analysts say an attempt to hand over power to him could trigger a major backlash and instability in what is the most populous Arab country.

Al Jazeera’s Ayman Mohyeldin reports from Cairo, Egypt’s capital, on the reaction to his involvement in the talks.
