An earthquake has hit northeastern Afghanistan, in the mountainous Hindu Kush region of the country.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage in the 6.3-magnitude quake, which shook the area late on Friday, the US Geological Survey said.

The earthquake struck 199.7km below the surface of the earth, about 75km southeast of the city of Faizabad and 265km northeast of Kabul, the capital.
