Kenya prepares for referendum

Government deploys 18,000 police before Wednesday’s vote on new constitution.

Kenya is preparing for a much anticipated vote on constitutional reforms, with voters heading to the polls on Wednesday.

The government has dispatched 18,000 additional police officers across the country, as some fear the vote could re-ignite ethnic tensions that rocked the country two and a half years ago.

The vote will be the first national poll in Kenya since the 2007-08 disputed election which precipitated ethnic violence and left 1,200 people dead.

The promise of a new constitution was part of the peace deal that ended the bloodshed, but the reforms deal with some divisive issues.
