Chile mine rescue may take months

Efforts to dig 700-metres deep tunnel to reach miners could take until December.

Miners could be trapped for months

Engineers say it could take up to four months to dig a tunnel deep enough to rescue 33 gold miners trapped 700 metres underground near the northern city of Copiapo, in Chile.

The miners had been missing for 17 days until one of several drill probes managed on Sunday to reach the group, all of whom had survived when part of the mine collapsed.

Al Jazeera’s Nicole Johnston reports.
